Ethanol producing startup Coskata has developed a process that yields ethanol for $1 per gallon, vs. the $2-4 per gallon of current methods. It's simple: vaporize plant matter (you don't need sugar crops like sugar cane or corn) to carbon gas, feed it to bacteria, and out comes ethanol. It sounds too good to be true, but GM has already bought a share of the company, so let's hope this is the sign of cheaper times to come. (and the end of wasteful ethanol corn subsidies)
